Woodwind and Piano Faculty
Mr. Liberto majored in music composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he studied woodwinds with acclaimed performer and educator, Joe Viola, and has performed professionally for over forty years. He maintains dual studies in woodwinds and piano, and has studied with diverse artists such as west coast woodwind artist, Paul Horn (pioneer of New Age music) and Patricia Arden, who at the time was head of the piano department for Princeton University. In Philadelphia, Mr. Liberto studied woodwinds with Grover Washington, Jr., the father of Smooth Jazz. He has also completed studies in piano performance at the New School for Music, Princeton, NJ. His relocation to New York City brought continued studies in woodwinds with flutist Jayne Rosenfield, who studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal and teaches at Princeton University and Julliard. Mr. Liberto also has a degree in electronic engineering, and spent 20 years working for Wall Street firms Merrill Lynch and DowJones/The Wall Street Journal (while still continuing to perform).
Locally, he has served as Creative Director for the Himalayan Institute and has completed two documentaries—one on the history of Dorflinger Glass, "The Glass Cottages of White Mills," and the second about Living Treasures’ artist, John Russo.
Mr. Liberto is vice president of the Wayne Country Arts Alliance, a board member of the Wayne County Library, and has worked on several projects with Dr. Louise Montello-pianist and author of "Essential Music Intelligence." In addition to his faculty position at Black Bear, he currently runs two businesses, libertoDESIGN and Alta sta Aerial Maps, and performs locally with various jazz and classical musicians.
